Australia vs India, 1st T20I

Start Time

1:45 PM
8:15 AMGMT
1:45 PMLOCAL
Australia opt to bowl
Anish: No Arshdeep today who has been relatively the best T20I bowler for India in the recent past. Probably India are looking to strengthen the lower order batting with the inclusion of Harshit Rana. Hope the decision does not backfire in the second innings.
-- Mitchell Marsh has now won 18 tosses in T20Is and has opted to chase in each of the 18 instances!
UPDATE: Nitish Kumar Reddy has been ruled out for the first three T20Is. The all-rounder who was recovering from his left quadriceps injury sustained during the second ODI in Adelaide, complained of neck spasms, which has impacted his recovery and mobility. The BCCI Medical Team is monitoring his progress.
Teams:
Australia (Playing XI): Mitchell Marsh(c), Travis Head, Josh Inglis(w), Tim David, Mitchell Owen, Marcus Stoinis, Josh Philippe, Xavier Bartlett, Nathan Ellis, Matthew Kuhnemann, Josh Hazlewood
India (Playing XI): Abhishek Sharma, Shubman Gill, Suryakumar Yadav(c), Tilak Varma, Sanju Samson(w), Shivam Dube, Axar Patel, Harshit Rana, Kuldeep Yadav, Varun Chakaravarthy, Jasprit Bumrah
Suryakumar Yadav: We were looking to bat first. I mean, it looks like a good wicket. And I heard from our analysts that there have not been a lot of games played here. Might get slower in the second innings. So, yeah, we wanted to bat first. (On the prep for the series) Yeah, I mean, we were here three, four days before this game. Though it was cold yesterday and today. But today, it looks good. Hopefully, we'll have a good game. (On India's good run in T20 cricket) Yeah, I mean, they know what's to be done when they go inside. They know their roles really well. Have good responsibility on their shoulders. And they just enjoy the game. (On picking the XI) Big headache, yeah. It's a good headache. It's not a bad headache. It's a good headache to have. But yeah, good to have so many options. The guys who are missing out are Rinku Singh, Jitesh Sharma, Washington Sundar, Arshdeep and Nitish.
Mitch Marsh: We are going to bowl first. It’s a good surface. I think most times we come to Canberra, it’s always a great surface, beautiful ground, and it’s going to be a stellar crowd, so I’m looking forward to it. (On his side playing an aggressive brand of cricket) Yeah, as do India. I think both sides just lack a lot of power. As we know, India are the number one ranked side in the world for a reason, so I’m certainly up and about for the contest. (Build up to the World Cup) Yeah, it’s exciting. I think all teams around the world now are really pushing their deal towards the World Cup, so we’re excited to test ourselves against the number one ranked side in the world. (Team combination) Eleven players - a few batters, a few bowlers, and a few all-rounders. Keep it simple (smiles)..
Australia have won the toss and have opted to field
Pitch report: It (pitch) has a nice covering of grass which means it will come onto the bat nicely. There might be some dew later on but it should be batting-friendly - opines Parthiv Patel.
Hello and welcome, everyone! The young Indian side, relatively new to Australian conditions, will be eager to make an impact in this five-match T20 series. The comparatively larger grounds and extra bounce here could pose an early challenge, but they’ll look to adapt quickly. With the ball, India will depend on Jasprit Bumrah and Arshdeep Singh to make early inroads, while the spin duo of Varun Chakravarthy and Kuldeep Yadav - both in excellent form, will aim to stifle Australia’s explosive middle order through the middle overs. All set for an exciting contest as the defending T20 World Champions face off against the Aussies in Canberra! Stay around for the toss and teams..
18:15 Local Time, 07:15 GMT, 12:45 IST: Australia wrapped up the ODI series 2-1, and the focus now shifts to the T20 leg of the tour. It was an emotional end for Indian icons - Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli, who played their final match on Australian soil; both departing in trademark fashion. Rohit dazzled with a magnificent century, while Kohli’s composed innings at the Sydney Cricket Ground was a fitting farewell. With the stalwarts signing off this tour in style, the baton now passes to India’s next generation.

If the ODIs were the preliminary yet heavy entree that you often get served upon arrival in an Indian household, the Ashes can be considered the ultimate main course plated for the business end of the summer. That would make the tightly-packed five-match T20I series between Australia and India that very tempting in-between snack you're handed for the peckishness in between the two meals.

It's crisp, it's crunchy, it's full of spice and it's explosive from the moment you get anywhere near it.

To start with, these are the two best T20I teams in world cricket currently. With the Indians probably well ahead of everyone else, including Australia who to their credit are playing their best T20 cricket in a while.

Also if the ODIs were centred around the final appearances from Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli on Australian soil; the T20Is are all about the premiere outings for the next generation of Indian superstars Down Under.

From the redoubtable Abhishek Sharma to the talented Tilak Varma and from Rinku Singh to Varun Chakravarthy. Alongside the return of Jasprit Bumrah who lit up the stage last summer during the Border-Gavaskar Trophy.

It's safe to say that most cricket fans in Australia are currently chomping at the bits for the Ashes to start, with speculation rising with each passing day over the make-up of the home team's line-up. But the next week and a bit will come as a welcome break from that anxiety-leaden pursuit, at least briefly, as they sit back and revel in the gangbusters approach to batting from two power-packed batting line-ups as we travel across the country, from the southern tip all the way up to the northern belt.

There's also the added layer to how things shape up in this five-match series, with both teams on significantly impressive winning sprees in the lead-up to the next T20 World Cup, which starts in less than four months.

When: Australia v India, 1st T20I, October 29, 2025, 19:15 hrs Local Time, 19:15 hrs AEDT, 13:45 hrs IST

Where: Manuka Oval, Canberra

What to expect: The nation's capital doesn't see a lot of men's international cricket at this time of the year so there still seems to be a tinge of newness to proceedings here. There's been unseasonal rain in most parts of Australia, but it's expected to clear by the time the opening T20I kicks off in Canberra.

Team News

Australia

The Australian selectors have been busy shuffling the pack over the last week or so with their squads to give their certain and potential Test players enough preparation time for the Ashes while maintaining a strong enough group to combat India's challenge. A couple of unforeseen injuries have further complicated affairs, and that should open the doors for Josh Philippe to probably get a game as a specialist batter as Josh Inglis returns to the team. That does give the Aussies a very ominous looking batting line-up up and down the order, with special focus on Josh Hazlewood as he continues to wheel away at the top of his game.

Probable XI: Travis Head, Mitch Marsh (c), Josh Inglis (wk), Marcus Stoinis, Tim David, Mitch Owen, Josh Philippe, Nathan Ellis, Xavier Bartlett/Sean Abbott, Matthew Kuhnemann, Josh Hazlewood
