Sri Lanka winless on tour
3-0 in the T20Is and now 2-0 in the ODI series!! Sri Lanka just cannot catch a break as their losing streak extends on this tour. England have been absolutely professional in their display and it is the batsmen who keep letting the visitors down. Can the visitors pull themselves up in the final ODI? They would desperately love to avoid getting whitewashed twice on the same tour.
Another one
That's a lame pull shot from Asalanka and for a change, it's David Willey who picks up a wicket instead of Sam Curran. Sri Lanka are 21/4 and they badly need runs from Hasaranga.
Gets worse
Sam Curran strikes again and he will really fancy picking up a five-wicket haul today. This was a sharp inswinger once again and Nissanka sees his stumps rattled. They are 12/3 now and this just doesn't look good one bit.
Ridiculous start
Got to feel for Sri Lanka fans. They are really getting used to this level of cricket from their stars. Kusal Perera was trapped leg-before-wicket by Sam Curran in just the second over and he has to walk back for a duck. Two balls later, Avishka Fernando suffers the same fate as well and is trapped plumb in front. That ball did move back in. Sri Lanka are 6/2 already and the worst part is that both Kusal and Avishka wasted two reviews.
Toss - England opt to bowl
No surprises there as England opt to bowl after winning the toss. Sri Lanka might be thankful for that too as they wouldn't want their batsmen to be under any pressure chasing a big total. The hosts are strengthened further by the return of Jason Roy. Sri Lanka have included Dhananjaya de Silva. He needs to replicate his Test form. Avishka Fernando has also been included to bolster that batting lineup.
Teams:
Sri Lanka (Playing XI): Pathum Nissanka, Kusal Perera(w/c), Avishka Fernando, Dhananjaya de Silva, Wanindu Hasaranga, Dasun Shanaka, Charith Asalanka, Chamika Karunaratne, Binura Fernando, Dushmantha Chameera, Asitha Fernando
England (Playing XI): Jonny Bairstow(w), Jason Roy, Joe Root, Eoin Morgan(c), Sam Billings, Moeen Ali, Sam Curran, David Willey, Tom Curran, Adil Rashid, Mark Wood
Build up
185 is a score Sri Lanka should have targeted in the T20Is against England. Instead, that's all they could muster in the opening ODI having already been blanked 3-0 in the T20I series. The batsmen constantly have been letting them down and the departure of Niroshan Dickwella, Danushka Gunathilaka and Kusal Mendis has only added to their woes. Kusal Perera did play a responsible knock in the opening game but he only found support from Wanindu Hasaranga. No other batsman touched 20 and that is indeed a major worry. We might see changes in the lineup once again today as they look to put up a better show with the bat, if not a match-winning one.
For England, it's all about making good use of the momentum they have been building over the last few days. Vital Super League points are there for the taking and they very well know the challenge is a lot easier than what they might encounter in a few days time when they take on Pakistan. It will be interesting to see what changes the England thinktank make to their XI knowing a win today will help them clinch the series. Welcome to the live blog for the second ODI. Hopefully, Sri Lanka put up a fight and keep the series alive.
