Mortaza: The crowd has been really superb for us and the atmosphere has been amazing. He (Shakib) has been outstanding for us in the tournament, he keeps scoring runs in every game and also comes on to bowl whenever needed. That partnership between Mushy and Shakib was important, as the track wasn't easy to bat on. Tamim batted well too and then the finish from Mahmudullah and Mosaddek was also crucial. Obviously, that's a call for the physio to make (on Mahmudullah's calf injury) but there's a week left and I think he should be fine. If we play well, we should be able to do well (against India and Pakistan).

Naib: Obviously, the last game was tough but today, we weren't good on the field and gave 30-40 runs extra. It was a slow wicket with help for the spinners but batting wasn't that hard. Credit to Shakib, he bowled really well. He (Najibullah Zadran) is a strong hitter, so we wanted to hold him back and hence, sent Ikram up so that he could rotate the strike. But it didn't work. We have done a lot of good things in the tournament. To do well in such a tournament, you need to prepare well. We didn't have some things going our way like some key injuries and all.

Shakib, Man of the Match: It's been great (the support from fans) throughout this World Cup. They have been supporting us from the first game and luckily we have started well and they have been supporting us all through so far. Hopefully it will continue in the next few games as well. Five wickets obviously (which was special). It was important to bat deep and I had to really work hard for my 50 runs. Without Mushy (Rahim) we would not have got where we got. Others chipped in with the bat as well. Overall, it's a team effort and we know it's gonna get tough with three spinners. Before this World Cup, I was fully prepared; it's the best I have prepared and its paying off. A combination of hardwork and luck I guess (about his form in this tournament). Two more important games are coming up for us. India and Pakistan, we have to play to the best of our ability to win those matches but this win will give us a lot of confidence.

Shakib Lords over Southampton

Saifuddin and Fizz provided the finishing touches to seal a clinical 62-run victory. However, the major share of the credit for the victory goes to one and only Shakib.

Five wickets and fifty runs. Can he do anything wrong? Yes, he couldn't stop a boundary in the 47th over!! And that made Ian Smith aptly say, "Shakib is human. Yes, he is a human."Rahim also played the decisive role with a vital 83 on a used up surface.

Afghanistan, meanwhile, would be pondering over winning the toss and fielding first on a slow turner. What made them think that way? Maybe the good old myth related to overcast conditions aiding conventional swing ensured they took the decision to field? Unfortunately, it didn't swing at all for the Afghanistan side.

Prelude:

Cricket in Bengal goes back a long way. In 1792, Englishmen living in the districts of Barrackpore and Dum Dum most likely played a cricket match opposite the Raj Bhavan in then Calcutta.

More than 100 years later, a team representing Bengal played against RF Vernon's XI. Even after the Eastern Wing of Bengal became a part of Pakistan, roots of cricket continued to exist. From 1955 onwards, the National Stadium in Dhaka began to host Test matches.

After Bangladesh's Independence and their qualification for the 1999 World Cup, cricket has blossomed further. However, passionate support also heightens the expectations. Fans would expect their team to do well all the time. To their credit, Bangladesh have done well over the last few years, qualifying for the semifinals of the Champions Trophy 2017.

In the ongoing World Cup, despite a few slip ups, Bangladesh have managed to keep their hopes of progressing to the last-four alive. However, for that to happen, the Asian country has win all their remaining three game, including today's match versus Afghanistan. Even then, they have to depend on other results.

Can the Mortaza-led side continue to march along? What about Shakib Al Hasan's wonderful run? Or will Afghanistan put up another fine show after coming so close to beating the fancied Indian side? Can Nabi, Mujeeb and Rashid Khan combine once more to put Afghanistan in the ascendancy? We will have all the answers in a while.

With the track in Southampton again expected to offer something for spinners, both teams are set to go in with spin-heavy playing XIs.

For a while there seemed to be a slight drizzle but rain has stopped for now. The groundsmen are busy taking the covers off. Unfortunately, the toss has been delayed and will take place at 10.10 AM local time.

Here's our detailed preview for the game.
