Right! That's a wrap from Centurion. Both teams had their moments, but South Africa showed better application under pressure and sealed the game with plenty of overs to go. The next ODI is at Kingsmead Durban, where Sri Lanka, not long ago, pulled off one of the historic run-chases in Test cricket. Can that inspire them to perform better and make a comeback in the series? We will have the answers on Sunday, March 10. It's a day game and do remember to tune in early. A huge shout out for all the feedback and comments. Until next time, goodbye and good night!!
Post-match talk!
Faf du Plessis, winning captain: I suppose from a perfect game (it was rewarding). We probably would have wanted 40-50 runs after the start. You are not always gonne bat well and put up the runs. But you need your bowlers sometime to bail you out of trouble. The three fast bowlers in tandem was good to see. Lungi hits the bat hard and always picks up wickets. He is a massive weapon for the team. He (Nortje) has got a huge tank to bowl 7 overs in a row and bowling them with control, good signs for us. Probably from a year or two I wanted to transition from a good player to a great player. It has been a mental shift. Obviously for us the vision is to look ahead. We will look at possibly making some changes and it is good we are 2-0 up, gives us an opportunity to make those changes. We have someone like JP to comeback, so we have to see where we can fit him in, same with Steyn.
Quinton de Kock - the obvious choice for the Man of the Match: I didn't mean to be (in a hurry). The wicket played nicely up front. I didn't plan to go full blown but it just happened. I think that is the way we want to play cricket, not the names but the ball. KG came out there with great intent and that is the fastest he's bowled in a while. Hopefully it lasts the whole series. I am working on him (Miller) and will make him a better 'keeper one day.
Lasith Malinga, losing captain: First 10-15 overs we did not bowl well. But we corrected ourselves and restricted them to 250. Very good effort from the bowlers. The batsmen didn't understand. We should analyse and need to understand the value of playing international cricket. We have had enough talking, players have to realize the opportunity that is given to them.
ALL OVER!
Malinga chips a simple catch to Steyn - who's subbing for de Kock (Miller kept wickets the last couple of overs) - and South Africa go 2-0 with three more games to go. That was an implosion of massive proportion from Sri Lanka; lost their last seven wickets for 46 runs. They had the chase under control with Kusal Mendis and Oshada Fernando going well, but thatrun-out of Kusal Mendis opened doors for the home team who hadn't looked back since.
Sri Lanka's last hope departs
Thisara Perera smashes Tahir over mid-wicket for a mighty maximum, and he gets carried away next ball, only to hand a sitter of a catch to deep extra cover. Two balls later Tahir dismisses Rajitha plumb lbw for 0. South Africa just two wickets away...
Just when a partnership was developing
Sri Lanka have been sent two steps back. A 40-run stand between Kusal Mendis and Oshada Fernando appeared to be swinging the game into some semblance of balance before a double strike has sent them two steps back.
The first is a run-out. Pretty needless. It was behind the wicket so the non-strikers' (Kusal Mendis) call. But Oshada is ball watching. Kusal stutters and is caught short by a direct hit.
Oshada doesn't stay long enough to atone for his error. He is pinged on the pad by a quick Nortje delivery. He reviews but umpire's call rules him out.
The leading edge consumes another
First ball wicket for Anrich Nortje. Kusal looking to turn it to the onside, closes bat face early. Miller takes the catch running in from cover.
They've started much better...
2nd ODI - Preamble
Sri Lanka were brought crashing back to earth at Wanderers after their glorious highs of the Test series win. There'll be time for reflection, but it's now. If that win was an improbable proposition before the tour, their mission World Cup 2019 would lie in the same ballpark.
Lasith Malinga has a quite a task on his hands to galavanise this side, bereft of several key players. Now he has to get them geed up to avoid going down two-nil down. Although series results are secondary at this point. It's about identifying the personnel and the style of play, although it might be a little too late for the latter.
What about South Africa then? They're significantly better-placed than their visitors but have a few questions to answer themselves.
We've got those covered in the Preview. Why don't you gorge on it while we wait for the toss?
