No fifty for Dhoni; Boult four-fer sets up series decider
No fifty for Dhoni; Boult four-fer sets up series decider
Eventually it's a 40-run defeat for India. They were able to even get that close because MS Dhoni managed to get a few big hits late in the night for his 37-ball 49. But he'll have much to answer for his middle-overs lull. Boult finished with 4-34 but let's not forget the contributions of the two spinners , who gave away just 56 between them in 8 overs of high quality spin bowling.
That sets up nicely for Trivandrum. It's a decider folks. It should be fun. That's it from the blog. Do hang around cricbuzz for all the reaction stories. Should be fun. Until then good bye, good night!
A third for Boult; Axar falls
Just the formalities left to be completed now. A superb bowling effort this from Boult. He set it all up with that double strike to remove Rohit and Dhawan.
Kohli falls; NZ close in
And that should be that for India. Trivandrum, gear up for a series decider! Santner bowls it into the pitch, quicker through the air. Kohli dances out but can only nick it to the keeprer, who takes off the stumps too - just in case. Gone for 65 off 42. Curtains, one would believe!
All swings and only misses for Dhoni
Dhoni is clearly struggling out there, against Santner, Sodhi and now against Milne. The big shots just aren't coming out. Especially against Milne, one feels he is trying to hit the ball too hard. He's played about three overs on his own for only 16 runs. Six dots in a situation like this, umm.. getting steeper every moment. Kohli's momentum getting affected as well? Time will say.
Fifty No. 18 for Kohli
Kohli had hit four boundaries already but hits no. 5 and 6 were tad too special. One scorching drive off Munro before skipping out to Santner to launch him over his head. As cliche as it reads, he's been in the zone. Pinches a single to get to his fifty, no big deal made about the celebrations. Just a raise of the bat, he knows the task ahead is very steep.
Overs 7-10 - Kohli gets in to the act but loses Iyer, Pandya
Kohli doesn't want Santner to settle into a rhythm. He gets one past point and then walks down the pitch to hit the extra cover fence for a over. He follows that up with an attempted reverse sweep and survives a loud LBW shout (and a DRS review). The next ball is launched into the stands for a six.
Shreyas Iyer, who'd gone all rusty after a brisk start, then throws it away with an ungainly swipe off Munro to hand the bowler a skier. New Zealand bring back Ish Sodhi who then castles Hardik Pandya with a googly. Pandya spends a good time staring at the wicket. New Zealand are a cock a hoop!
Overs 5&6 - Santner begins tidily
40 off the powerplay for the loss of the openers. Iyer needs to cool it a bit. He's looking to hit everything out of the ground. Will not work always at the international level. Mitchell Santner begins with a three-run over!
STAT: Kohli goes past Tillakaratne Dilshan to move to the second spot in the T20I run charts. Baz McCullu is on top.
Chase - Overs 3&4 - Boult v Kohli; Iyer on fire
Boult bowls three top-class deliveries to Kohli despite one (a check drive) going for four. A surprise short delivery certainly wakes Kohli up. The next time he sees Boult, he charges down the ground and absolutely nailed a straight drive.
Shreyas Iyer meanwhile has got his innings going with four boundaries. New Zealand are giving him width outside off. And he is certainly enjoying it.
Chase - Overs 1 & 2 - Boult removes openers
Rohit pulls a short delivery from Milne over mid-on for four and then both batsmen help themselves to a single each for a six-run over.
Boult with the big strike for New Zealand in the second over. A straight delivery that Dhawan plays around. Timber. India promote Shreyas Iyer to No.3 and the young Mumbaikar begins with a boundary in his maiden international innings.
India are jolted for a second time as Rohit Sharma falls to the left-armer. The ball angled across him is nicked to the keeper. Loud shouts. Everyone knows it but the umpire reacts rather belatedly. India two down!
