England go 1-0 up with 7-wicket win

It may not have been as easy as it should have been, and perhaps that had little to do with the Edinburgh shock but England nevertheless complete the chase of 214 with six overs and three wickets to spare. David Willey remains unbeaten on 35. Much to ponder for Australia although Tim Paine will be glad that his bowlers didn't simply roll over and surrender the game. Much work needs to be done with the bat!

Build-up

Hello and welcome to the Live Blog for the first ODI between England and Australia at The Oval. It's all about mending bridges now as the Tim Paine-led Australia seek a famous makeover. We'll only know when the battle commences: if the Aussie mongrels had a snip or if England take their cues from the crowds. Certainly those watching at the Oval on Wednesday (June 13) will be on top of those in yellow with similarly toned and comically-sized bits of "sandpaper".

But there is enough at stake for both sides beyond vendettas, writes Vithushan Ehantharajah in his build up for the opening game.

England are entering this game on the back of a loss to Scotland in Edinburgh, them something to think about a year out from next year's World Cup. Australia, meanwhile, go into the first of this five-match series without five mainstays through a combination of punishment and injury. Or, put another way, a chance to look at five new players ahead of their title defence in 2019.
