A right-handed batsman, Shafqat Rana played 5 Tests for Pakistan between 1964 and 1969. He did not perform badly, scoring 221 runs in 7 innings, including 2 fifties. However, his start-stop career meant that he never really cemented a permanent position in the team. His talent though was never in question.

His first class record, which reads 4947 runs in 107 first-class matches paints a better picture. He continued to serve Lahore with distinction until his retirement in 1978-79.
