An accurate pace bowler, Don Beard took 278 first-class wickets at an impressive average of 21.58. His domestic exploits were rewarded when he was given his Test debut against West Indies at Christchurch in 1952. He played only three more Tests thereafter.

Don Beard died in 1982 while on holiday in England after retiring as principal of Te Aroha College. His son, Derek Beard has played 8 first-class games for Northern Districts.
