A swing bowler, armed with genuine pace, Mike Selvey began his county career with Surrey in 1968. After failing to make a mark there, he shifted to Middlesex, where his career bloomed. He was an integral part of the Middlesex attack that won the county championship four times.
He was a surprise pick for the fourth Test against the visiting West Indies in 1976 and enjoyed a sensational debut, ripping through the strong West Indies batting line-up, finishing with figures of 4-41, including the prize scalps of Fredricks, Richards and Kallicharran with his first 20 balls.
However, Selvey failed to sustain the early promise and his Test career was limited to just 3 matches. Later on in 1983, he shifted to Glamoragan from Middlesex before calling it quits. Post retirement, Selvey became a cricket correspondent for The Guardian newspaper and he still maintains his position as a top-notch cricket writer.
