SUMMARY

George Duckworth didn’t have a big frame physically but was a bloody strong man mentally and his voice had a booming effect. He plied his trade in cricket during the period sandwiched between the two World Wars. In terms of skill, Duckworth was a phenomenal wicket-keeper, arguably among the finest of his times. Blessed with great flexibility and deftness behind the stumps, his glovework was artistic in execution. As a batsman, he was a feisty character and had the stomach for a fight. Most of Duckworth’s impact knocks came during a crisis and it was his mental fortitude that shone through these innings. He had a great eye for talent and was an excellent man-manager – qualities that helped him post- retirement in being a selector. A man of great humor, Duckworth was an entertainer to those around him and there was barely a dull moment in his presence. He also performed successfully as a commentator for television and radio.
