Sri Lanka vs Oman, 16th Match, Group B, ICC Men's T20 World Cup 2026 - Commentary

SL
225/5(20)
OMAN
120/9(20)
PLAYER OF THE MATCH
Two wins out of two for Sri Lanka, but they'll now have to ace the bigger tests. Australia is coming up and will then be followed by Zimbabwe. The group will perhaps be decided based on the two matches. On the other hand, it's a learning curve for Oman and they'll hope to do better when they face Ireland next. The T20 WC continues and we have Nepal taking on Italy at the Wankhede stadium shortly. Change tabs and follow all the action. For now, cheers and bye..

At the age of 43y 161d, Mohammad Nadeem is the oldest batter to score 50-plus in a T20 WC match. The previous oldest was Sanath Jayasuriya (39y 345d) against WI in the 2009 edition.
Dasun Shanaka | Sri Lanka captain - It's very hard to replace someone like Wanindu because he is a champion bowler. But of course - Dushan Hemantha - so he's been in the side for a while. In the absence of Wanindu, he played a few games here and there. So the confidence is there, but you know, straightaway coming to the game, it will be a bit harder. I'm sure that he will come good in the next game. The confidence with the batting especially. So I mean, that's one batting lead, you're not taking a hit. So it was a concern in the recent past, so I'm really happy about the way Kusal Mendis went on in the last two games. So probably that should be the role that he must do in the next game as well. And each batter chipping on at the right time is important as well.
Jitender Singh | Oman Captain - I think we were very positive. We couldn't take much from the first game, we were always in the game today, but Sri Lanka were a better side, putting us under pressure and 225 was a bit too much. There's hardly anything you can do with the skill level, perhaps be a bit more positive with the mindset. If you see our squad, there are hardly 4-5 guys who have played 40+ T20Is. We lack experience, the sad reality is we don't get too many matches against full members and no exposure to franchise tournaments. Our coaches and the management are trying their best, but we can't do much without a lot of T20 exposure. But we'll keep trying our best.
Pavan Rathnayake | Player of the match : I like to play spin, but I always try to protect my style. I like both spin and pace. The game went very well. Everyone supports each other and everyone is doing well. So in the next game, we will try to do our best.
14:24 Local Time, 08:54 GMT, 14:24 IST: A nice workaround for Sri Lanka as they secure their second straight win of the tournament. They were asked to bat first, the openers failed to fire, but the middle-order came to the fore as number 3, 4 and 5 all made fifties. 225 was the eventual total and it simply put Oman out of the contest. Dushmantha Chameera took a wicket in the very first over, Maheesh Theekshana did so in the second and the rest of the innings was a mere formality. 43-year old Mohammad Nadeem put up some resistance and brought up a maiden World Cup fifty. Wasim Ali threatened briefly during his 20-ball 27, but Oman were simply second best as they were outclassed by the hosts. Seven bowlers were used by Sri Lanka and Theekshana was the pick. Dushan Hemantha, who came in for the injured Wanindu Hasaranga, took some stick, but Sri Lanka will feel comfortable with the eventual margin.
