Sri Lanka, on the fourth day of the Test on Sunday (June 12), walked into the match holding on to aglimmer of hope.

The rain frustrated them, the luck deserted them and the visitors, at times, helplessly saw England stretch the overall lead to 361 before declaring on 233 for 7. In reply, they managed to see off the remaining 12 overs to post 32 for no loss at stumps.
Sri Lanka started the day on 109 for 4 after rain washed out the first session. Sixty overs were supposed to be bowled in the day but continuous rain interruptions meant only 45 overs were possible.
The visitors started well. Shaminda Eranga trapped Steven Finn (7) plumb in front in the fifth over of the day to reduce England to 120 for 5. The lead was 248 then. Out walked Alastair Cook, at No. 7,
