It took eight days in the series but New Zealand have finally found their competitive resolve. After watching Australia pile on another massive total, they could have easily wilted and conceded a lead. Instead, Kane Williamson and Ross Taylor combined to give the hosts, a taste of their own medicine. That record partnership was followed by Taylor becoming the first Kiwi to score a Test match double ton against Australia. He's still around and New Zealand trail only by 49 with four wickets in hand.

If they can eke out a lead of 100 or so, they may just about have enough time to force a result. Yes, the pitch has been a road for most parts of the game but Mitchell Starc, in that crazy burst of his last evening, showed that there maybe something in it for the bowlers after all.
