Virender Sehwag came up with a special knock in the all-important Qualifier 2 match against Chennai Super Kings (CSK) to help Kings XI Punjab (KXIP) enter the final of the Indian Premier League (IPL) for the first time.

The out-of-favour India opener blasted a superb 122 off just 58 balls to power KXIP to a mammoth total of 226/6 at the Wankhede stadium. CSK, in reply, could only manage 202/7, which meant that they missed out on their 5th final appearance on the trot.

Statistical highlights of the Qualifier 2 match:

• Virender Sehwag registered the highest score by a Kings XI batsman in the IPL, going past Paul Valthaty's 120* against CSK in 2011. Sehwag's 122 was the fifth highest score in the IPL.

• Sehwag's 122 is the highest individual score in this IPL so far and only the second hundred of this edition. He surpassed Lendl Simmons' 100* against KXIP.

• Sehwag, with his blistering knock, registered his second IPL hundred. He became the fifth player with two or more hundreds in the Indian Premier League. Players with 2 or more hundreds in the IPL: Chris Gayle (4), Virender Sehwag (2), David Warner (2), Adam Gilchrist (2), Murali Vijay (2).

• In a play-off/semi-final match, Sehwag's 122 was the highest individual score. He bettered the efforts of Murali Vijay, who had scored 113 for CSK against DD in the 2012 semis against DD.

• This was the fifth individual century against Chennai Super Kings. CSK have now been at the receiving end the most number of times, followed by Deccan Chargers, KKR, KXIP and RCB, who have witnessed four individual hundreds each as the opposition team.

• This was KXIP's 4th 200+ total in this edition of the IPL - three such totals coming against Chennai Super Kings. Punjab are the only team who have posted 200+ totals more than once in 2014.

• CSK were on level with KXIP after the first innings for the most number of 200+ totals over all editions of the IPL. The team in yellow took a lead in this when they managed to score 202 in reply to KXIP's mammoth total. CSK now have scored 200 or more 11 times so far.

• Interestingly, during the innings break, KXIP and CSK had also conceded the most 200+ totals in the IPL. Punjab went atop this list when they ended up conceding 202 in the second essay. They have given away 200 or more 9 times so far in the Indian Premier League.

• Suresh Raina got to his fifty off just 16 balls, making it the fastest half-century by a CSK player while it was the second fastest fifty overall in the IPL.

• Raina, during the course of his stupendous knock, helped Chennai reach 100 in the 6th over - the highest powerplay score in IPL.

• The left-hander, who seemed on track to get to the fastest ton, was run-out on 87 off 25. He ended his innings with a strike-rate of 348, making it the third highest SR in T20 cricket (Min 50 runs). Kieron Pollard (56* off 15 for T&T against Leeward Isl) and Yuvraj Singh (58 off 16 for India against England) occupy the top-two spots.
