When you authored the greatest innings that has ever been played by anybody in the history of your country, you generally don't need to prove anything to anyone. When on top of that, your batting average in the last decade has been above 51, and in the last twelve months above 71 (these are the stats before today's innings) - you can justifiably think your position in the team is secure and that you have done enough in a long and distinguished career and in the recent past to not have people questioning your right to be in the team.In most cases you can. Not if you are VVS Laxman though. His place in the Indian Test lineup has never been in doubt for many years now as far as the team management, the selectors and those who have a longer memory-span than the character of Guy Pearce had in Memento are concerned. But in the age of Twenty20 explosion, the average Indian fan, does give a darn good imitation of anterograde amnesia when it comes to the old guard of Indian cricket, and especially so in the case of Laxman.Amongst the golden generation of Indian batsmen, his case has always seemed the most understated. He is not Tendulkar - the master of all he surveys. He is not Dravid - at whom critics can carp all they like, but who can point to a mountain of runs scored under the most difficult conditions to silence all but the extremely irrational. And he is not Ganguly - whose charisma and fiery personality ensured nobody could (or can) forget him.Laxman just goes about his task, seemingly putting so little effort while caressing the ball, that fans too often forget, just how much dedication, skill and fortitude has gone into making that effortless cover drive or that magic flick of the wrist. All it takes is one match or two without a big score, and the trolls appear - on online chat forums, message boards, discussions - airing opinions about how he should be dropped in favour of a younger player. The only pleasing thing about this for Laxman fans is that the man himself invariably produces yet another vintage master-class. He did it against Australia (on too many occasions to count), he did it against South Africa on his favourite ground [Link:
