Talking points - CSK's new spin twins, the cat and mouse game with Narine

Chennai Super Kings secured their second consecutive win, piling more pressure on a toothless Kolkata Knight Riders outfit at Chepauk on Tuesday (April 14). The result ensures that KKR remain the only winless team in IPL 2026. Here are the talking points from the fixture:

New spin twins for CSK?

Historically, CSK have always had spin duos or even trios running the show for them, especially at Chepauk with MS Dhoni at the helm. While recent history suggests that those days are well behind them now, Tuesday was still a throwback. Not many teams have had two overseas frontlines spinners in their team in the IPL. Certainly, not many have had two left-arm overseas spinners in their playing XI/XII. But CSK have unleashed Akeal Hosein and Noor Ahmad in the last two games which incidentally has seen them finish on the winning side.

While one of them is adept at bowling in the Powerplay, the other has the knack of picking up wickets in the middle overs, as we saw last year. After a poor start, Noor was at his best again, running through KKR to finish with a three-wicket haul whereas Akeal finished with figures of 1/26. Assistant bowling coach Sridharan Sriram, in fact, lauded the West Indian for playing a role in Noor's success on the night. "Akeal was the one who went and told Noor about the exact length, the in-between length that he needed to bowl. Once he found that in-between length, I think Noor was relatively unplayable," Sriram said after the game.

The cat and mouse game

Speaking of Akeal Hosein, KKR's Powerplay and the minutes leading up to it were fascinating to watch. It appeared as if both teams anticipated each other's moves.

Expecting CSK to bring on Hosein as the Impact Sub again, KKR reshuffled their batting order and promoted Sunil Narine to the top. With KKR also having a right-hand-heavy top order until this game, Narine was seen as the disruptor who could counter CSK's plans.

However, there was brief confusion over CSK's Impact Sub. Immediately after the first innings, CSK's bowlers usually step out to warm up on the side wicket. But Hosein hadn't emerged. Instead, Matt Henry walked out in full kit, briefly sparking speculation before heading into a fan activity.

Hosein eventually came out, but with Narine opening, CSK stuck with pace. There were a few misses, a few connections, mistimed shots, a dropped catch, and a couple of sixes - but CSK didn't budge. They held Hosein back until Khaleel Ahmed dismissed Narine in the fifth over.

There are no prizes for guessing who came on to bowl the very next over.

Gaikwad's never-ending woes

Despite CSK coming into this fixture on the back of a win, there was pressure on Ruturaj Gaikwad to deliver with the bat. The CSK skipper has had a poor start to the season in terms of his strike rate. While he did attempt to force the pace right from the start in this game, it didn't work as he found the fielder in the deep to fall for 7 (6).

With the calls for him to swap batting positions with Ayush Mhatre growing louder, the 29-year-old saw his young teammate put on a sizzling show in the Powerplay after his dismissal. And if that wasn't enough, Gaikwad also went on to drop a simple catch, which, thankfully from a CSK perspective, didn't cost them much.

Time for Tim?

Another day, another disappointing outing for Finn Allen. He began the season brightly with a couple of cameos, but for a specialist opener, KKR would expect far more, especially after his strong showings in the T20 World Cup and the BBL.

However, Allen has failed to make an impact in the last three games, registering single-digit scores. How long can KKR afford to persist, especially given their winless start?

Tim Seifert - one of Allen's close mates - is waiting in the wings. Seifert also enjoyed a strong T20 World Cup, even outscoring Allen. His game against spin has improved as well, and with Cameron Green also struggling, he may not have to wait too long.

KKR's lone bright spot

Was it all doom and gloom for KKR on the night? Probably not. Their problems in the bowling department following injuries to Harshit Rana and Matheesha Pathirana are well documented. However, Kartik Tyagi's performance should give them some hope going ahead. Tyagi was excellent in this fixture and at times was even unplayable. He used the off cutter bouncers to good effect and mixed it up with some serious pace, clocking almost 150 kmph on several occasions.

One such delivery jagged back after pitching to beat the in-form Sanju Samson's defence. Dewald Brevis was roughed up too at the start of his innings and even though the South African batter did recover, it was Tyagi who got rid of him in the end. The 25-year-old burst onto the scene almost six years ago in IPL 2020. While his career never took off from there, Tyagi finally appears to be turning a new corner, nailing down a permanent spot for now.
