Marsh ruled out of Australia's opening match due to groin injury

Mitchell Marsh, the Australia captain, will miss the team's opening match of the ICC T20 World Cup after sustaining a direct blow to the groin during training earlier this week, Cricket Australia announced in a release on Thursday, a few hours ahead of their game against Ireland.

"Marsh is experiencing ongoing pain and discomfort which is restricting his movement. Scans have confirmed internal testicular bleeding, and he will require a period of rest and rehabilitation. His return to play will be guided by symptom resolution and medical advice," the release added.

No timeline has been mentioned regarding Marsh's return to action.

The Australian selectors have called up Steve Smith, who was named in the standby, to travel to Sri Lanka as cover to acclimatise and prepare, should his services be required.
