Three games into the WPL, all five teams have featured in the competition but the Delhi Capitals and Gujarat Giants come into Sunday's game with contrasting results, amid a quick turnover of 24 hours between both games.
The Capitals were heavily beaten by the Mumbai Indians in their opening game, not the start they would have wanted under the leadership of new captain Jemimah Rodrigues. The bowlers leaked runs in the first innings with all three of their spinners - Sneh Rana, Shree Charani and Minnu Mani having conceded at over 9.5 runs an over. Debutant Nandini Sharma was the bright spark for them as she picked up the two wickets of the four to fall while the side was on the field.
It was a similar story with the bat for the Capitals. Barring Chinelle Henry, who racked up a valiant half-century, none of the batters turned up with the second-highest score of 12 by Niki Prasad. The top-order looked all at sea against the early seam movement while the middle order couldn't occupy the crease to give Henry company and build partnerships along with the West Indian.
The Giants, on the other hand, began the WPL on a winning note for the first time in the competition's history. Anushka Sharma, 22, and Ashleigh Gardner set the tone with the bat while Georgia Wareham and Bharti Fulmali muscled the ball at the death to take the team to their highest ever score of 207 for 4 in the WPL.
A combined bowling effort put the Giants in good stead as the trio of Georgia Wareham, Renuka Singh Thakur and Sophie Devine picked a brace of wickets. However, they would hope to close out the innings earlier as the Giants conceded 54 runs in the last five overs against the UP Warriorz mainly to the likes of Asha Sobhana and Sophie Ecclestone.
