Perth pitch rated 'very good' despite Test lasting only two days

The International Cricket Council (ICC) has rated the playing surface for the first Ashes Test in Perth as 'very good'. The rating was given by match referee Ranjan Madugalle.

As per ICC's four-tier pitch rating system, 'very good' is their highest rating and denotes that the pitch had good carry, limited seam movement, and consistent bounce during the two-day contest.

The first Ashes Test which saw over a 101,514 people come in through the turnstiles during the two days saw 19 wickets fall on Day 1 for 305 runs while on Day 2, Australia chased down England's total of 205 in just a single session.

James Allsop, Cricket Australia's Chief of Cricket mentioned it was disappointing for fans holding tickets for Days 3 and 4 but the Ashes came alive in those two days with some incredible cricket.

"The match referee's "very good" rating justifies our belief Perth Stadium produced a pitch that provided a fair balance between bat and ball. The dominance of some brilliant pace bowling from both sides and the frenetic nature of the contest meant the match lasted only two days.

"This was disappointing for fans holding tickets for days three and four, but we saw some incredible moments which captivated huge viewing audiences and will inspire even more kids to pick up a bat and ball this summer," he said.
