Despite defiant half-centuries from Tim Paine and Pat Cummins, South Africa maintained their ascendancy in the fourth Test, stretching the lead beyond the 300-run mark. Having bowled out Australia for 221 early in the second session on Day 4 in Johannesburg on Sunday (April 1), the hosts moved to 58 for 1 at Tea, leading by 325 runs.

The South African openers made steady progress to extend the lead, although they weren't in control of their shots on a few occasions.
