It was a stop-start opening session in Sydney on Day 2.
Steve Smith scored his 33rd Test fifty ahead of the Lunch break.
With the second new ball, Stuart Broad bowled beautifully and was rewarded with the wickets of Smith and Cameron Green.
The set Usman Khawaja though, went on to make a remarkable comeback, timing the all beautifully and got to a composed century - his 9th in Tests.
Khawaja and Starc then added 67 for the eighth wicket to take Australia close to 400.
Broad picked up his fifth wicket after Usman Khawaja chopped on for 137.
Australia declared for 416/8 in their first innings.
England survived the 5 overs late in the day to finish Day 2 on 13/0, trailing by 403 runs.
