Ashes, 1st Test, Day 1
Steven Smith lit up his comeback Test with a famous hundred, his 24th in the format.
Peter Siddle gave Smith good company in a massive eighth-wicket stand, scoring 44 off 85 balls.
Before Siddle and Smith got together, England had a good couple of sessions with the ball. Australia had earlier opted to bat first on a mud-coloured pitch under blue skies
James Anderson walked off in the first session with a tight calf, and bowled only 4 overs in the day.
Chris Woakes had the ball on a string after the lunch break, getting the ball to seam prodigiously into the left-handers
Ben Stokes was expensive in his first spell but came back with Pat Cummin's wicket in his second.
Pat Cummins couldn't quite summon his batting abilities at Edgbaston
Travis Head batted well before falling LBW to Woakes after lunch.
Tim Paine, the Australia captain, fell to a short ball from Stuart Broad.
This was also the start of the World Test Championship. Players from both sides sported numbers and names on the back of their tshirts
Stuart Broad picked two wickets in the first session and then two more in the second
