Rabada broke the threatening 75-run stand between Stokes and Bairstow.

Debutant Toby Roland-Jones chipped in with a run-a-ball 25.

Stokes brought up his fifth Test hundred with second of the three sixes on trot, off Keshav Maharaj.

Stokes led the way as England posted 353 in their first innings.

In an impressive opening spell, Roland-Jones dismissed both South African openers on either side of the Tea break.

Roland-Jones then removed Hashim Amla on six for his third wicket of the day.

Quinton de Kock was Roland-Jones's fourth victim on debut.

De Kock made only 17.

Playing his 125th Test, James Anderson got rid of visiting captain Faf du Plessis.

Chris Morris was the sixth South African wicket to fall, and Anderson's second.

Broad struck late in the day to end Rabada's resistance.
