Kane Williamson then collaborated with Ross Taylor to keep the runs flowing and ensured New Zealand stay on top.
Taylor (49) scored 99 for the third wicket with Williamson to take the team past the 200-run mark.
Williamson fell for 100 off 97 as Australia fought their way back in the death overs.
Hazlewood ended with 6 for 52 to shoot New Zealand down for 291 all out after being 254 for 3 at one stage. Australia were set 235 in 33 overs after a second rain delay.
New Zealand pacers rattled Australia early on leaving them struggling on 53 for 3 before rain interrupted for the third time in the day.
Adam Milne picked up two wickets before third rain interruption forced the officials to call off the clash. Both New Zealand and Australia shared a point each.
