India vs England, 1st Test - Day 1

Hosting its maiden Test, Rajkot was in celebratory mood ahead of the first Test between India and England.

Alastair Cook and Hameed Haseeb got off to a tentative start against the pacers. However, it was local boy Ravindra Jadeja who got the first breakthrough of the match. He trapped Cook leg before wicket. The England captain contemplated taking a review, but decided against it. As it turned out, he would've survived.

Ravichandran Ashwin accounted for the wickets of Haseeb Hameed and Ben Duckett late in the first session.

Alastair Cook and Virat Kohli lead their respective sides to the field for the national anthems.

England skipper Alastair Cook won the toss and elected to bat. It was the first time India lost a toss in a home Test since Sachin Tendulkar's farewell series in 2013. India came in with five frontline bowlers, while Haseeb Hameed made his debut for England.

Joe Root led England's charge with a near-flawless innings. He stroked his third century against India, 11th overall and first in Asia.

15 minutes before Tea, Mohammed Shami injured himself while on his run-up, and was taken back to the pavilion after a brief check-up by the physio.

Moeen Ali provided able support to Joe Root with a fine half century. Along with Root, he put on a century-stand (179 runs) for the fourth wicket and seize the command of the contest. He finished the day unbeaten on 99.

England scored over 100 runs in all the three sessions on the opening day as they reached 311 for 4 at Stumps.

Indian players await the third umpire's decision for a caught and bowled appeal. As it turned out, Joe Root was declared out off Umesh Yadav.
