An attacking opening batsman, Paul Whitelaw played first class cricket for Auckland from 1928-29 to 1946-47. However, he could only manage two Tests for New Zealand and both were against the touring England side in 1932-33. A series known for Walter Hammond's pyrotechnics - scoring 563 runs in two innings. Whitelaw played four innings in the series and scored 64 runs, being unbeaten twice.
He held a record which lasted for almost 40 years. In 1936-37, Whitelaw scored his highest first class score - 195 against Otago and added 445 runs for the third wicket with Bill Carson.
Whitelaw took his last breath on August 28, 1988 in Auckland, aged 78.
