A right-arm pacer, who hit the deck hard, Kerry Walmsley made his Test debut for New Zealand against Sri Lanka in 1995. He did not perform badly, taking a 3-fer in the first essay. However, with the administration in a state of turmoil, Walmsley lost his place after the next Test in Dunedin. The advent of injuries downed his cause further. He came back in 2000 as a back-up bowler but failed to deliver.
Walmsley played 67 first-class and List-A games, picking 253 and 79 wickets respectively.
