A right-handed batsman who can also keep wickets, Michael Guptill-Bunce shouldn't be confused with his more illustrious countryman, Martin Guptill - who, co-incidentally is his cousin. Part of New Zealand's Under-19 World Cup squad for the 2008 edition of the tournament, Guptill made his first-class debut for Auckland during the 2012-13 season.

Having had the opportunity to bat at the top of the order, Guptill however hasn't shown the consistency that's needed to challenge for a spot in the Black Caps line-up. He did manage to finish as Auckland's leading run-scorer during the 2017-18 season, finishing with an aggregate of 517 runs, but his average of 27.21 suggested that he was simply the highest scorer in what turned out to be a mediocre season for Auckland's batsmen.
