PLAYER OF THE MATCH
A big wake-up call for the defending champions. Barring the first six overs, they were never really in this contest. Credit to South Africa who were outstanding in all facets of the game. They executed their plans brilliantly to keep the Ahmedabad crowd quiet. Despite losing three quick wickets, the Proteas didn't go into a shell but instead went after the top-ranked bowler. Markram, then, rotated his bowlers smartly to squeeze the flow of runs. While the likes of Jansen, Bosch and Maharaj picked multiple wickets, Lungi Ngidi was almost unplayable, even though most of his deliveries were pace-off. A statement win from Markram and Co. Watch out, other teams. On that note, it's time to bring the curtains down. Both the host nations suffered heavy defeats today. Tune in tomorrow for Zimbabwe vs West Indies. Until then, goodbye.
Aiden Markram | South African skipper: Great performance. Very different type of wicket to what we’ve had here, so great to see the boys assess that pretty early and adapt their skills to execute their plans. We’re really pumped for the bowling group. They’ve been working hard, started the comp a bit tough, but the way they rocked up tonight was a great effort. I think first and foremost was the partnership. (Miller and Brevis) The guys were great, put that together for us, steadied the ship and kept us in the game. Conversations towards the back end were that the ball was travelling tonight, felt almost a bit spongy, so it was about finding space where we could run hard, drop the ego and take as much as we could at the back end. They bowled well up front and at the death as well, but I thought our batting through the middle was probably the difference. Good effort in the field. We put two down but not for lack of effort. Against UAE we probably weren’t as connected as we’d like, but that presence and connectedness was much better today. We’re going to make mistakes, we don’t mind that as a group, so we’ll brush those aside. We feel like Lungi is a threat whenever he bowls and that he can take wickets for us in that middle phase. It depends on conditions - if we don’t feel like it will do much with the new ball, we’d rather hold him back, but if there’s something in it he gets something out of the wicket. We’ll assess it on game days and give him that role. He’s happy to do anything, a proper team man, and he just keeps delivering. I think it’s the same for both teams having played each other recently (Talking about their next game vs West Indies). They’re a dangerous T20 side playing good cricket, so we’ll enjoy this tonight, park it, and get our minds sharp for that West Indies clash. It’s a big game for us and we don’t want to take confidence or good vibes for granted. Important to rock up on the 28th and take it on full steam ahead.
Suryakumar Yadav | Indian skipper: I feel we were always in the game when we started. I think we bowled really well in the beginning, 21 for 3, and the way they batted after that from 7 to 15, I think they batted really well, and then we came back again in the game later on. Overall, if we see, we bowled really well, but we could have batted a little better. My thing is sometimes you’ve got to think, if you’re chasing 180-185, you can’t win the game in the powerplay, but you might lose the game in the powerplay. We lost too many wickets in the powerplay and then we couldn’t have small, small partnerships which we wanted for chasing 180-185, but that’s part of the game. We learn from it, we’ll sit back and then come back stronger. I think everyone knows their combination (Bumrah-Arshdeep) has been very lethal. Both of them have played together. If you see today also, both of them bowled eight overs, picked around five wickets and gave around 45-50 runs. If I’m not wrong, I’m not good with numbers. But they bowled really well in partnership and that’s what we want from them. Both are experienced and it’s good to have both of them in our side. Hopefully bat well, bowl well and field well (Talking about the plans for the next game vs Zimbabwe). That’s it. We’ll try and keep it simple, play the same brand of cricket which we want to play and nothing changes. I think we’ll come back strong.
David Miller | Player of the Match: I think you’re always behind the eight ball there and it’s just about making sure you stick to your strengths. You don’t want to go into your shell. You want to play good cricket shots but be nice and selective. Getting in that powerplay there with the fielders all in the ring, it was quite nice to get a couple over the fielders. And then Brevis was batting really well all the way through. Stubbs too, I think it was just about extending that partnership as much as we could. We’re all boundary strikers, but it’s about making sure you rotate the strike well. I think with the nature of this ground, you actually want to look straight. It’s smaller straight than square, so you want to shape up to be hitting straight and then react accordingly. It wasn’t spinning too much in the first innings, so just looking to be nice and aggressive to the spinners and chip it away where you can. They (India) are a serious setup, some really world-class bowlers there. It’s something we spoke about a lot. We’ve played against them a lot as well, so it’s about matching the intensity, if not raising it against their bowlers and putting them under pressure. They are good bowlers, but they do bowl bad balls, so it’s about making sure you’re in a position to capitalise.

India, chasing for the first time in this World Cup, lost Ishan Kishan for a duck. Tilak tried to be aggressive and nicked off. Abhishek finally got off the mark in this compeition but South Africa kept it tight against him and Jansen deceived him with the knuckle ball. Just like their opponents, India lost three wickets inside the powerplay but the hosts couldn't find a way to put any sort of pressure on the South African bowlers. The move to promote Washington didn't work and SKY fell for a scratchy 18 with Bosch accounting for both of them. Power-hitters - Hardik and Dube - struggled to time the ball in their 35-run stand. Just after the drinks break, Maharaj picked three wickets in an over which reduced India to 88/8. Dube struck a few boundaries and top-scored with 42 but it was one-way traffic throughout the innings.
17:05 GMT, 22:35 IST: South Africa definitely brought their A-game today here in Ahmedabad against the defending champions. After opting to bat, their start was far from ideal as they lost their top three cheaply. Miller walked in at 20/3 and played a brilliant counterattacking innings. He along with Brevis took the attack to the Indian bowlers and didn't allow the spinners to dictate terms as they forged a 97-run stand. India threatened to fight back with the ball towards the end but Stubbs' cameo (24-ball 44*) powered them to 187. That turned out to be more than enough on a deck that was slightly on the slower side.
