That wraps up our coverage of the first ODI of this three-match series. We’ll be back soon with the remaining two ODIs, followed by a three-match T20I series - plenty more action still to come between these two sides. For now, goodbye from all of us!
Charith Asalanka: (was he worried at the end) Not too much, considering the result. But there are a few areas we need to improve, especially the depth in fast bowling. Otherwise, everything went very well. (there was not much help at the start) We knew that in the first 25 overs it won't spin. We spoke about pulling the game back. After the 25th or 30th over, it started to spin, and then Wellalage, myself, Dhananjaya, and Jeffrey bowled really well. (Wellalage's contribution) That was huge for us. He didn’t have much time to bat but did the damage at the end. He also picked up two wickets and took a couple of very good catches. (on his bowling) I just wanted to bowl. Over the last two years, I’ve bowled a lot, so I wanted to contribute.
Harry Brook: (how crucial was the toss) Yeah, very crucial in the end. But Sri Lanka played a very good game and deserved the victory. (were they a bowler short) No, not really. I thought we bowled really well through the middle. The spinners bowled exceptionally well. Obviously, they got hold of us in the last over, but that’s part of one-day and white-ball cricket. (Was it a tough playing spin) Yeah, definitely. They’re a very good side with some extremely good spinners. They got enough out of the surface to make us miss the ball - get stumped, bowled, whatever. They challenged us in a lot of different departments and had a good game. (Root-Duckett made batting look easy) They always do that. Both (Root and Duckett) of them said it was hard to start. Unfortunately, we lost a few quick wickets in succession, and that put us on the back foot.
Dunith Wellalage | Player of the Match: When I came to the middle I wanted to support Kusal Mendis, he was batting really well. In the last 3 overs we tried to score as many runs as possible. The most important thing was pace variations and the line.
22:07 Local Time, 16:37 GMT, 22:07 IST: Sri Lanka secure a 19-run win over England to go 1-0 up in the three-match ODI series. Batting first, Sri Lanka were anchored by an excellent innings from Kusal Mendis, with Janith Liyanage chipping in with a valuable knock and Dunith Wellalage adding a handy cameo to lift the hosts to a competitive 271 on a spin-friendly surface. In reply, England were dented early by the loss of Zak Crawley, though Ben Duckett and Joe Root rebuilt with a steady partnership - both reaching their fifties in the 25th over. The pair, however, found it difficult to shift gears against Sri Lanka’s spinners, who made full use of the conditions and struck at regular intervals. Overton’s late cameo pushed the game deep, but it ultimately wasn’t enough to take England over the line. From Sri Lanka’s perspective, it was a complete bowling effort. The spinners, in particular, made the difference, keeping things tight while also striking regularly to apply constant pressure. The pacers meanwhile proved to be expensive, but held on to their nerves towards the end. Stay around for the presentations..

But the Lankans hold their nerve in the final moments.
