That's that. England win by 7 wickets. After those three wickets late last evening, England had smooth sailing on the final day. Bairstow and Lawrence only needed 36 to win when they came to the middle on the final morning. The pair was proactive, they kept the runs coming at a brisk rate and quietly chased the required runs down in their 50-plus stand that gave England the series lead. Sri Lanka's spinners didn't get it right this morning, but that said, every day isn't Sunday for a side to get 7 wickets for 36 runs, however tough the wicket was. Four consecutive Test wins for England in Sri Lanka, then, which is quite an achievement.
Clinical win for England on the final morning, who chased down the required 74 down without much fuss then. Root will be pleased, having led from the front with a spectacular double century. Sri Lanka had the advantage of winning the toss and opting to bat, but blew it with a poor outing first up being bowled out for 135. With England piling on the runs thereafter, they always were left playing catch up. Although the Lankan batsmen showed stoic resilience in the second innings starring Thirimanne and Mathews, Dom Bess and Jack Leach ensured England weren't chasing too many runs in the end.
Thank you for your company throughout this first Test. We look forward to you joining us for the second and final Test of the series on January 22. Until then, goodbye!
