Summary:England, opting to bat after a lengthy rain delay, started positive before both Mark Stoneman and James Vince threw their starts. Stoneman fell after a brisk 24 and then Cook and Vince consolidated. Just an hour before Tea, Vince and Cook were sent back as Australia came back into the back despite minimal assistance from the pitch for their pacers. Root and Malan then put on 133 for the fourth wicket partnership that revived England's innings and put them on track for a big first-innings total. But that wasn't meant to be. A century for Root, too, wasn't meant to be. He fell on 83. And in the next over, England lost Bairstow too to finish with 233 for 5 on Day 1.

Do join us tomorrow for live updates from Day 2. Till then, ciao!

And they have!Bairstow's luck runs out. He's edged one behind the stumps and England lose another wicket at the stroke of stumps. In fact, that'll be stumps.Australia nudged ahead with two late wickets in the post-Lunch session and they've done exactly the same in the closing minutes of play on Day 1. Root and Bairstow in successive overs is a huge turning point in this innings.

REVIEW WASTED:LBW appeal against Bairstow, who hasn't even opened his account yet. Turned down but Australia are keen on a review. Fair delivery but HotSpot shows an inside edge. So that's a review down the drain. Baristow survives and also opens his account. Two overs left in the day. Can Australia bag another wicket here?

WICKET: Joe Root has registered his best score of the series... and I've jinxed it! Root's gone for 83! Australia took the new ball as soon as it was made available and Root welcome Starc back into the attack with a couple of boundaries. However, his luck runs out on the third ball. Inswinger, Root flicks it towards square leg where Mitch Marsh takes an excellent, diving catch. Root knows he deserved a hundred, he also knows he's made a mistake. He's on his feet. Fourth fifty of the series but that century shall remain elusive for now... No nightwatchman, here's Jonny Bairstow.

The shadows are getting longer at the SCG. But it's only a matter of four more overs. The new ball is also due in an over.England 218 for 3.

FIFTY:The SCG applauds a solid half-century Malan has made to dig his team out of trouble. Gets there off 146 deliveries. Really impressive batting.

Seven overs left in the day and Malan is seven away.. scratch that. Boundary! He's approaching his half-century. Australia getting desperate for a wicket now.. last seven overs in the day.

CENTURY:Root takes a single off Cummins to bring up the 100 of his partnership with Malan. Malan though has made only 39 in this partnership but played a very crucial stand in reviving England after they were reduced to 95 for 3. Root - steady as ever, but this time England would like to see their captain convert this into a hundred.
