As a seamer, Kyle Jarvis no doubt hoped that the first three days of the rest of his life would play out in friendlier conditions than the ones at Queens Sports Club.

Last month Jarvis gave up regular stints on seamers' paradises in England, which had helped him take 84 wickets in 25 first-class games for Lancashire over the past two seasons. His reward for renouncing his Kolpak status to return home and play a part in Zimbabwe's resurgence was a slow, dry pitch in the first Test against the West Indies.

"The plan going into the game was to take pace out of the picture, with (Kemar) Roach and (Shannon) Gabriel and (Jason) Holder playing. It wasn't easy," Jarvis said after the West Indies tightened their grip on the match.
