With an unenviable record in big tournaments, South Africa's calendar is littered with unwanted anniversaries. Next week, for instance, marks 18 years since that fateful World Cup semi-final against Australia, and 18 years of living under its hex.
But earlier this week, there was the anniversary of a day of hope. It was the 6th of June 2011 when AB de Villiers was named South Africa's new captain in one-day cricket. Several months of disbelief, anger and despair had followed the Proteas' exit from the 2011 World Cup, but already supporters were daring to dream once more.
