A single for Shafiq off Herath in the 67th over helped the batsman bring up his 12th Test fifty. Wahab Riaz then survived a leg-before appeal when Herath rapped him on the pads in the 69th over and Sri Lanka lost a review in the process. Pakistan reached 250 when Wahab scored a boundary in Herath's next over, to bring the deficit to 50.

Sri Lanka have the upper hand at this stage of the game. Although the middle and lower-order did not bat well, Kaushal Silva held one up and scored a patient hundred, his second in Tests, to help Sri Lanka get to 300. Wahab Riaz and Zulfiqar Babar bagged three wickets each, while Yasir Shah and Mohammad Hafeez picked up two each. In reply, Pakistan lost wickets at regular intervals to be struggling at 118/5. The visitors still need 33 runs to avoid the follow-on. Remember, because the first day's play was washed out, the follow-on margin was reduced from 200 to 150.

Sarfraz completed 1000 Test runs with a couple off the second ball of the 50th over off Perera. The batsman also scored a couple off the next delivery which helped him bring up his sixth Test fifty.

Sarfraz Ahmed batted positively on Day 4 while Asad Shafiq supported him well as they put on a good stand to help Pakistan recover. The pair put on a steady half-century stand and a boundary for Sarfraz off Pradeep in the 49th over helped the visitors avoid the follow-on. Meanwhile, Shafiq had a lucky break as adelivery from Perera rolled perilously close to the leg stump when the batsman got an inside edge off an attempted sweep.
