South Africa rode on a fine 179-run second wicket partnership between Dean Elgar and Faf du Plessis to reach 270/2 at the end of the first day's play in Port Elizabeth. While Elgar was dismissed for 121, du Plessis remained undefeated on 99 at the end of stumps. He would look to complete the century and in the company of captain Hashim Amla, look to play out the first session on Day 2 before stepping up to post a big first innings total.

West Indies on the other hand gave a lacklustre fielding performance on Day 1. They would hope to tighten that and sting early blows to restrict the No. 1 Test side from making a big score.
There were also Test debuts for Temba Bavuma and Kenroy Peters.
A slight drizzle on the second morning caused a wet outfield and delayed start. While the rain stopped, an umpire inspection was scheduled for 11:15 to decide the next course of action.
There should be an inspection soon by the umpires. Hopefully we have some positive news on a start in Port Elizabeth.
