After a successful tour of England, Sri Lanka would have come back home with a lot of confidence ahead of their series against South Africa. However, the hosts were taken by surprise after the Proteas came up with a clinical performance in the opening ODI in Colombo to take a lead in the three-match ODI series.

AB de Villiers will be hoping that the tourists can continue their good work and clinch the series while Angelo Mathews and his bunch will be eager to bounce back with a good all-round showing when the two teams face off in Pallekele.

Quotes:

Sachithra and Mendis are premier bowlers, especially in ODIs and T20s. When you look at those three, it's difficult to choose who is better: Angelo Mathews, when asked about Ranaga Herath's non-selection.

We realise that Sri Lanka will come back (hard at us). It would be great to wrap up the series in the next game, but we know it will be very tough: AB de Villiers not taking things for granted.

"The track is hard and there are a few cracks on the surface. It looks like a good track to bat on and the captain winning the toss should be looking to bat first," reckoned Mike Haysman.

Angelo Mathews won the toss and decided to bat first. Both teams were unchanged for the game.

Teams:

South Africa (Playing XI): Hashim Amla, Quinton de Kock(w), Jacques Kallis, AB de Villiers(c), Jean-Paul Duminy, David Miller, Ryan McLaren, Vernon Philander, Dale Steyn, Morne Morkel, Imran Tahir

Sri Lanka (Playing XI): Kushal Janith Perera, Tillakaratne Dilshan, Kumar Sangakkara(w), Mahela Jayawardene, Lahiru Thirimanne, Angelo Mathews(c), Ashan Priyanjan, Nuwan Kulasekara, Sachithra Senanayake, Ajantha Mendis, Lasith Malinga

Tillakaratne Dilshan started off in a positive fashion, managing boundaries at a regular rate. While some were edges, it did not deter the opener from going for his shots. However, Sri Lanka suffered a setback when Kusal Perera fell to Vernon Philander in the 4th over. Trying to work a delivery to the on side, the batsman was early into the shot and got a leading edge, which was snapped up by Hashim Amla at short mid-wicket.

Tillkaratne Dilshan took over soon after the dismissal of his opening partner as Sri Lanka soon overcame the early setback. The right-hander looked in ominous touch hitting on the up, stepping out to the spinners while also slamming fine shots off the back foot.

South Africa chances of removing the set batsman took a further blow as Dale Steyn was forced off the field with an injury.

While Dilshan looked in fine touch, the rest of the batsmen still struggled against the RSA bowlers. Kumar Sangakkara, who has been in god-mode recently, was soon back in the hut as Morne Morkel had the left-hander edge behind to Quinton de Kock.

Dilshan went on to reach his fifty soon after, and Sri Lanka will hope the exeprienced batsman carries on.

Dilshan continued in fine form after his solid start while Lahiru Thirimanne put himself in a position to get a good knock under his belt with a confident start as Sri Lanka went past the 100-run mark in the 18th over.

However the stand ended at the wrong time for the hosts as Thirimanne inexplicably smashed a long hop from Imran Tahir straight to Hashim Amla at deep mid-wicket.

Dilshan was the one batsman who looked comfortable against the South African attack and the right-hander looked in line to bring up yet another hundred at Pallekele. However, South Africa struck the gold mine as JP Duminy removed the well-set batter with an absolutely rubbish delivery. An off-spinner, well wide of the leg-stump, was the kind of delivery someone of Dilshan's calibre could have smashed out of the ground, but Dilshan looked like he tried to hit the ball too hard and only succeeded in pulling it back onto his stumps.

Mahela Jayawardene and Angelo Mathews kept Sri Lanka in the hunt for a big score as the duo put on a fine 50-run stand, which included 33 runs off the powerplay, as Sri Lanka crossed the 200-run mark.

However, against the run of play, Sri Lanka suffered a huge setback as Mahela Jayawardene was out to give Imran Tahir his 2nd wicket of the game.

Mathews too departed soon after his ex-captain made his way back into the hut as Sri Lanka lost their 2 main batsmen at the death. Priyanjan gave Sri Lanka a lift smashing Morne Morkel for a six and a four before Ryan McLaren took 3 wickets in one over to leave SL at 257/8.

Rain intervened soon after to stop play.

Sri Lanka lost their last 5 wickets for just 11 runs as Sri Lanka were bowled out for a competitive 267. Ryan McLaren was the star for the Proteas, taking 4/48 in his 10 over spell, while Dilshan was Sri Lanka's best batsman with 86.

Chasing 268 to win, South Africa suffered early setbacks as Lasith Malinga removed Quinton de Kock and Jacques Kallis in quick succession to leave the visitors in trouble.

De Kock had no answers to Malinga changing the line of attack to around the wicket and the left-hander was cleaned up with a pacy in swinger. Kallis, on the other hand, was caught by surprise by a sharp, short delivery and his attempted pull only caught the top edge before nestling in the out-stretched hands of the keeper, Kumar Sangakkara.

Hashim Amla and AB de Villiers were involved in a superb stand of over 50 as South Africa closed in on the 100-run mark. Amla, surprisingly, was the aggressor putting on a fine fifty to help RSA recover. de Villiers was content playing the sheet anchor role.
