The order has changed as PBKS leave CSK behind

For years, the gap between Chennai Super Kings and Punjab Kings was defined by history. CSK had an identity, clarity, and a system that outlasted individuals. PBKS, on the other hand, often felt like a team that was constantly rebuilding while rarely settling. Fast forward to 2026, and it appears the two teams have exchanged identities. How often have PBKS come into a clash against the mighty CSK as favourites? One team has made it to the final just twice in 18 years, whereas the other has won the championship five times.

Nevertheless, the result on Friday (April 3) shouldn't really come as a surprise. Not only did PBKS come into this clash on the back of three successive wins over the home side in their own backyard, but one look at both squads also told a story. It is often said that teams that get things right at the mega auction usually go on to have good results in the cycle. However, teams that make mistakes at the table end up playing catch-up for the entire duration of the cycle. And nobody knows that better than Punjab Kings. For years, PBKS have walked into mega auctions with promise and walked out with uncertainty. Big names, mismatched roles, and squads that never quite aligned. The cycle repeated often enough to become their identity.

In 2025, that finally changed. The right amount of money was spent on the right kind of players with clearly defined roles. This squad is well equipped to tweak its combinations for different conditions and surfaces. The batting lineup looks settled. More importantly, this is a squad unlikely to wilt if injuries occur. And now, they appear even stronger than they did in 2025, when they reached the final. For instance, Josh Inglis has been replaced at No. 3 by Cooper Connolly, who has already looked impressive. They have, in total, five seam-bowling overseas all-rounders, out of which three feature in the playing XII consistently. Given their versatility, any of them can seamlessly transition into the playing group if necessary.

This time against CSK, this group made a mockery of a 210-run chase. Even when they lost a few wickets towards the end, panic didn't set in because Marcus Stoinis and Shashank Singh were batting in the middle after the fall of the fifth wicket. It's quite difficult to gauge how CSK would have responded in that scenario. Remember, this isn't the old CSK. Without a 44-year-old MS Dhoni and a South African dasher who is half his age, CSK's middle order looks fragile. When Dewald Brevis was unavailable for the opening game, Matthew Short was drafted in to bat at No. 4, even though he has had his success right at the top of the order. Sarfaraz Khan provided some much-needed cheer on a gloomy evening for CSK, but even his recent T20 exploits have come while batting at No. 3.

CSK already have Ruturaj Gaikwad, Sanju Samson, and Ayush Mhatre occupying that top three. And Mhatre just showcased why he should continue batting there for the five-time champions. Kartik Sharma, their new recruit for over INR 14 crore, is best suited to bat at No. 4. The other INR 14 crore recruit, CSK didn't even pick him in their XII for the opening game, and when they eventually handed him his debut, Prashant Veer didn't bowl a single over while not setting the stage on fire with the bat as well. No wonder his skipper indicated in the pre-match press conference that the youngster is still a work in progress in this format.

Shivam Dube has experience batting down the order most recently for India, but once again, his best season for CSK came when he walked out to bat at the fall of the second wicket. In such a scenario, who can CSK rely on to get the job done down the order? Head coach Stephen Fleming believes there's no such thing as a finisher in this day and age in the IPL due to the Impact Player rule forcing the pace throughout an innings. But the reality is that successful teams employ players familiar with that role down the order to absorb pressure and deliver. And the fact of the matter is, CSK did fumble at the mega auction and once again in the mini auction.

One wonders for instance what could have been had it been Donovan Ferreira in place of Short in that CSK squad. Ferreira, traded to Rajasthan Royals earlier, cost them only INR 1 crore. Short cost CSK INR 1.50 crore. Bizarrely, that's also a player who is familiar with the Super Kings setup having played and delivered for them in the SA20 as one of JSK's finishers. While the sample size is too small at the moment, the two 14 crore assets haven't justified their price tags so far. One of them might not even be ready at this level yet. And we haven't even touched upon the bowling group, which has looked fragile ever since Nathan Ellis got ruled out. All these direct the scrutiny to the auction table in recent times.

Prior to this PBKS clash, Gaikwad put things bluntly. "We didn't have the best of squads last year," he admitted. "When I say that, no disrespect to any players, but I think the combination didn't click the way we wanted. And then, obviously, in the second year of the cycle, you have limited options, a limited pool available, and you try to fill those gaps with whatever players are available. You kind of hope that things will turn and fall into place. So, yes, we might have missed out on a few good players in the mega auction. But it is a learning process, and sometimes auctions not going well or things not falling into place can change the outlook of the whole cycle."

Naturally, he was criticised by certain sections of CSK supporters on social media for seemingly appearing to give up already. The supporters of this team do not take excuses kindly. This franchise was the gold standard when it came to success. But reality is different. The tide has indeed changed, with ironically PBKS appearing to set the standard now in terms of squad building and performances. While nothing can change in that bowling department immediately, Dhoni and Brevis cannot return soon enough to bolster that batting unit because the defending champions RCB are next.

Good luck.
