All-rounder James Coles starred with both bat and ball as Sunrisers Eastern Cape registered a commanding bonus-point victory over Joburg Super Kings to become the first team to qualify for the playoffs in this edition of the SA20.
Asked to bat first, SEC posted a competitive 178 for 5 on a surface that offered grip. Quinton de Kock and Jonny Bairstow provided early momentum, with the left-hander going on to score a fluent half-century (54 off 37), his third of the season. With SEC well placed at 88 for 1 at the halfway mark, Donovan Ferreira turned the game on its head with two wickets in an over, removing Jordan Hermann (caught in the deep) and de Kock (lbw). That brought debutant Coles to the crease, drafted in for Tharindu Rathnayake, who was unavailable due to national duty.
Coles and Tristan Stubbs were initially kept quiet, with SEC reaching only 129 for 4 at the end of 16 overs. After the timeout, however, Coles shifted gears decisively, taking on Richard Gleeson and Nandre Burger to find regular boundaries. His 29-ball half-century ensured SEC finished strongly on a slow pitch.
The task was steep for JSK, with no side having chased a target above 165 at the ground this season. The visitors began brightly, as Rivaldo Moonsamy and James Vince raced to 30 without loss after three overs. Coles then made an immediate impact with the ball, striking with his third delivery to dismiss Moonsamy and conceding just three runs in the over. Tight spells from Adam Milne and Anrich Nortje followed, leaving JSK on 39 for 1 at the end of the powerplay.
Building on the pressure, Coles struck again to have Vince stumped. Senuran Muthusamy then took control through the middle overs, removing Dian Forrester, Wiaan Mulder and Michael Pepper across two overs to finish with figures of 3 for 26. Sandwiched between his wickets was the run out of Matthew de Villiers.
The fast bowlers then wrapped things up, with Milne, Marco Jansen and Anrich Nortje cleaning up the tail as JSK were bowled out for 117 in 18.1 overs, never seriously threatening the target.
The victory, their fourth bonus-point win of the season, sent SEC to the top of the table, while JSK remained in the fourth spot. The result also ensured that Durban's Super Giants remained in contention.
Brief Scores: Sunrisers Eastern Cape 178/5 (Coles 61, de Kock 54, Ferreira 2-25) beat Joburg Super Kings 117 in 18.1 overs (Vince 30, Muthusamy 3-26) by 61 runs.
