India will be a batter short in the fourth innings of the first Test against South Africa as Shubman Gill has been ruled out of any further participation due to the neck spasm he suffered on the previous day. BCCI confirmed that he had to be taken to hospital for examination after the end of day's play on Saturday (November 15).

A little over an hour into the morning session of Day 2, Gill walked out to bat after Simon Harmer dismissed Washington Sundar. The South Africa off-spinner continued to bowl from round the stumps to the Indian captain, who slog swept him on the third ball he faced. Gill picked up a four for it, but was in pain and discomfort straight away. The Indian team physio came to attend to Gill who clutched the back of his neck.

After a brief check, he had to walk away retired hurt as his head movement was clearly restricted by the spasm. India lost the remaining seven wickets over the next 28 overs, and Gill wasn't able to return at any point as the innings ended on 189/9. He was subsequently ruled out of taking the field on the crucial Day 3.

BCCI has stated that he remains under observation in the hospital. It remains to be seen if he will make it back fit for the second fixture of the series, starting in six days' time in Guwahati.
