India captain Shubman Gill retired hurt in the morning session of the second day's play in Kolkata after what looked like a possible neck sprain. Gill arrived to bat right after the drinks break when Simon Harmer dismissed Washington Sundar.
The right-arm spinner continued to bowl from round the stumps to the right-handed No.4 batter, who defended the first ball he faced and then went for a slog sweep on the next. He connected well and earned his first four off it, but appeared to be in discomfort right after executing his shot. The physio came to attend to Gill who clutched the back of his neck and seemed unable to move his head freely.
After a quick check, Gill walked off the field, retired hurt, with Rishabh Pant replacing him in the middle.
