Jemimah Rodrigues walked in to bat, a little over an hour into the second day's play at the Wankhede and the first order of business was to console Richa Ghosh with a pat to her head.

A bit of hesitation on Smriti Mandhana's part and some poor communication in the middle had cost India a well-set batter's wicket. At the other end was Ghosh, barely three overs into her maiden Test innings, and India were still 72 runs in the arrears. Albeit only one week into Test cricket herself, Rodrigues was the senior here and their task was cut out. Australia have only ever needed a whiff to flip the game on its head, and this could have been the chance for their experienced bowling attack to claw back. Both the overnight batters had been dismissed in quick succession and the two new ones in the middle - tasked with repair - had just two innings and 15 balls worth of experience between them.

The rigours of Test cricket might be but this situation wasn't exactly new to the Mumbaikar. In just the last game - her maiden innings in the format - Rodrigues had flown under the radar thanks to her fellow debutant Shubha Satheesh, as the pair posted first-innings fifties
