Stumps: Australia 241/6

A strange end to a strange day of play in Hobart. It began with Stuart Broad tumbling on his follow through after the first ball. Australia tumbled thereafter, slipping to 12/3 before Travis Head joined forces with Marnus Labuschagne to lead a counter-attack. The latter fell for 44 off 53 and Head then stitched a century stand with Cameron Green (74). Both men were dismissed before the rain interval. England, though, were reduced effectively to a three-man attack when Ollie Robinson pulled up a back injury. Mark Wood and Chris Woakes had days to forget.

Still no team can claim to have the advantage as yet. We shall wait and see what Day 2 has in store. Until then, ta-ta!

Rain stops play

Is a steady drizzle and the covers come at Blundstone Arena. Australia 241/6

Green falls to the short-ball ploy

Some relief for Wood after what's been a miserable day for him. Green's been sublime and hits this short ball pretty well but finds the man at deep midwicket. It's the end of an excellent innings from Green. Falls for 74. You didn't even know he got there. It was that breezy. Had a 100 for the taking, however. Australia 236/6

Tea: 215/5 Australia

England need a dream spell from Broad under lights in the final session. Australia will call the shots if they get to 300 and beyond. England are severely hamstrung by that injury to Robinson.

Meanwhile, a 50 for Cam Green

He passed by almost unnoticed. Serene, uncomplicated knock from this highly-rated all-rounder. Can he make it a big one?

100 and out for Travis Head

Had a nervy moment on 99 when he nearly chipped a catch to mid-on and falls for a nearly similar stroke two balls later. Between that he managed to complete his fourth century and second one of this Ashes series. Stunning counter-attack once more. 101 (113) after walking in at 12/3. It's Chris Woakes, by the way, who breaks the stand.

Woakes has been off too

It's not just Wood that's leaked the runs for England today. Chris Woakes has had a pretty poor outing himself. He hasn't bowled a maiden and given away 42 from his 9 overs. He's back now with this partnership well past 100 and Head nearing his second ton of this series.

1 hour, 14 overs, 67/0

Conditions have settled in nicely for batting here at Hobart. And Head and Green are feasting. Root looking bereft of options really. He's brought himself on with no great success.
