New Zealand win by 8 wickets
Live Cricket Score: New Zealand vs Bangladesh, 1st ODI, Napier
A very smart performance from New Zealand. There was more belief, more patience, and less panic. They approached the chase sedately, helped by the fact that they were chasing only 233, only for the opening stand to grow into 103. Taylor was amongst the runs too, but it was Guptill's return to form and run-making that will please the home side after he went through a rough patch against India.
Hundred for Guptill!
After an indifferent series against India, and then a back injury, Guptill is back to his best. A very mature innings this. Didn't go all guns blazing, knowing it's an iffy middle-range target and that wickets upfront can do wonders. Took his time and now brings up his 15th ODI hundred, setting NZ on course for a 1-0 lead. We'd have seen something spectacular if Bangladesh win from here.
Williamson is out
Mahmudullah forced his captain to go for the review there after umpire Ravi didn't give the LBW decision on the field, and he's proved right. Williamson missed the lap-sweep and was struck on the pad in front of middle. Hitting leg-stump. And that's out.
NZ need 96 runs from 21.1 overs.
Mehidy strikes!
Breaks the 103-run opening stand. Quite an anticlimax the way Nicholls departed. Forward defence, inside edge and bowled. Gee... Mehidy just makes things happen. But NZ well ahead in the game, obviously.
... Guptill brings up his 35th ODI fifty soon after. Off 57 balls.
Century opening stand
In all honesty, Bangladesh have kept it tight but New Zealand are cunningly chipping at the target. Slow and steady don't win the race nowadays. There's nothing much in the pitch, yes, but the bowling also lacks the kind of incisiveness that India had on offer. One close run out chance in the 14th over is the only time Bangladesh looked like picking a wicket.
For the first time since Jan 2018, there has been a 50-run stand between the openers for Kiwis
The stand's growing..
They almost doubled the score in the next 3 overs. 42/0 after 10 overs. And Guptill and Nicholls look set to make more out of this pitch, that's settled well in the sun it's been receiving. Will be interesting to see what Bangladesh do to pick wickets. Because a safe start, with the bat or ball, isn't really safe in modern-day ODI cricket.
Safe start for NZ:22/0 after 7 overs
They lost top-order wickets against India, and here they are, trying to build. Much better. Plus, Bangladesh have been very disciplined. Mortaza and Saifuddin, and then Mustafizur, have all been tight around off-stump.
Landing area concerns for Saifuddin
In just his second over post the resumption, Mohammad Saifuddin has some issues with the landing area and calls for the sprinkling of sawdust
Bangladesh 232 all out
Caught unawares in the first ODI in Napier, Bangladesh were reeling at 94 for 6 before Mohammad Mithun came together with Mehidy Hasan and Mohammad Saifuddin to effect a grand recovery. Mithun hit a fifty and stitched together important partnerships for the seventh and eighth wickets, helping Bangladesh to 232 in 48.5 overs - a total that beggars a fight. Might or might not be enough. Here's the
