Clinical Sri Lanka...

On a day where 13 wickets fell, Sri Lanka, the home team, dominated the proceedings to bundle out South Africa for just 126 and then extended the lead to 272 at close of play on Day 2 of the opening Test in Galle. For the hosts, Rangana Herath, Dilruwan Perera and Suranga Lakmal shared nine spoils between them, while Dimuth Karunaratne continued his impressive form with a fluent hand of 60 in the second innings.

Sri Lanka's surge towards a dominant position was led by the reliable spin duo of Perera and Herath. The pair blended the arm ball with the scrambled seam variety to trouble the opposition ranks on a turning track. Keshav Maharaj, the nightwatchman, was done in by the arm ball from Herath. Perera followed his experienced campaigner by dismissing Elgar with the drifter. On both occasions, the batsman played for the turn and paid the price.

Hashim Amla and Temba Bavuma tried to resurrect the innings with a useful stand of 27 before Perera nipped out the former, with the short leg fielder pouching the catch. Bavuma, who had played a couple of fine sweeps, tried to employ the shot once more against Lakshan Sandakan and was castled via in inside edge. Sandakan had pitched it well outside the off-stump and Bavuma perhaps made an error of judgment by attempting the sweep.

Perera, at other end, continued to make incisions as he cleaned up Quinton de Kock with a peach from round the wicket. At that juncture, the visitors were 51 for 6 and in deep trouble. Faf du Plessis (49) led from the front and was given usual support by Vernon Philander (18) as the pair stitched a vital 64-run stand. Philander, who survived a few anxious moments, was eventually prised out LBW by Perera. The all-rounder, who had successfully reviewed once to overturn an LBW decision, again tried his luck with the DRS but to no avail.

Suranga Lakmal provided the finishing touches by generating contrast swing to snare three scalps, including that of South Africa's best batsman on show du Plessis. On the back of a sizeable lead of 161, Karunratne once more displayed all his skills on a helpful track before he fell to Kagiso Rabada, with Amla grabbing the catch in the slip cordon.

The South African camp also would be cheered up by Maharaj's performance in the second essay. The left-arm spinner struggled to bowl with control in the first dig, but in the second innings, he extracted appreciable turn to dislodge Dhananjaya de Silva, Danushka Gunathilaka and Kusal Mendis. The delivery he bowled to Mendis was one of the highlights of the day as he pitched it on middle and leg-stump before it turned sharply to knock down the off-stump.

Despite those late strikes, Sri Lanka hold all the aces on a crumbling pitch and they would fancy their chances of taking a 1-0 lead in the three-match series.

Sri Lanka extend lead

Gunathilaka has been prised out by Maharaj. He danced down the track but couldn't get to the pitch and Rabada took a fine, running catch in the deep.

Maharaj, for South Africa, bowled a couple of crackerjack deliveries to remove Mendis and Dhananjaya de Silva. Karunaratne, who continued to showcase his splendid skills against the turning ball, was finally sent back to the pavilion for a well measured 60. However, with the lead extending over 250, the hosts are right on top.

126 all out!

Lakmal is bowling with good rhythm. He gets one to nip back from round the wicket and castles Rabada who was staying leg side of the ball. Hence, he wasn't able to cover for the angle and was cleaned up. Good strategy from Lakmal to bowl from round the wicket.

Eventually, Steyn tried to slog Lakmal and was caught in the slip cordon. Herath and Perera used subtle changes in release points and seam angles to bamboozle the opposition ranks, while Lakmal generated appreciable reverse swing to snare three scalps.

Sri Lanka have a lead of 161 and are in the pole position...

Double strike

Philander and Du Plessis battled for 165 balls and now both have been dismissed in the space of three deliveries. Philander went first, going deep in the crease to tuck one down to the leg side off Dilruwan. Misses and doesn't succeed with a review either. Three reds and gone.

And then, against the run of play. Suranga Lakmal gets one to jag back from a length and castle the South African captain for 49! In case you didn't believe it earlier: South Africa are in big trouble!!
