Henry Nicholls ended a 16-innings drought without a 50+ score to complete his ninth Test ton.

Williamson was eventually dismissed for 215 - his sixth Test match double hundred.

Williamson and Nicholls put on 363 for the third wicket - the fifth-highest partnership in New Zealand Test history.

Nicholls took only 28 balls to go from 150 to 200 before New Zealand declared their first innings at 580/4.

Matt Henry and Doug Bracewell took a wicket apiece to leave Sri Lanka 26/2 at Stumps on Day 2.
