Boland bagged two wickets - including that of Root for a duck - to leave England reeling at 36 for 4 at lunch.

Stokes and Bairstow played out a wicketless second session to carry England to 135 for 4.

Ben Stokes fell for 66 after a 128-run stand with Bairstow.

Cummins dismissed Buttler for a duck to help Australia get on top.

Bairstow registered a ton in the final over of the day as England ended day three on 258 for 7.

Bairstow ended the day unbeaten on 103 and will hope to fight on on the fourth day with England still trailing by 158.
