Lakshan Sandakan's second five-wicket haul in Tests combined with Dilruwan Perera's experience allowed England to add only 24 runs to their overnight score. The visitors were bowled out for 336.

Joe Root's two dropped catches and a missed run-out by Ben Stokes helped Sri Lanka put on a massive second-wicket stand, repairing for Danushka Gunathilaka's early wicket to Jack Leach.

Dhananjaya de Silva and Dimuth Karunaratne hit fifties in a massive stand of 164 runs for the second wicket.

Adil Rashid brought England the breakthrough before Tea, and opened up the floodgates.

Keaton Jennings's four stunning catches at forward short leg formed the core of England's comeback after a chastening period of play. His sharp catches helped dismiss Danushka Gunathilaka, Dimuth Karunaratne, Dhananjaya de Silva and Roshen Silva.

Thanks to Adil Rashid and Ben Stokes, both of whom bowled in tandem on either side of Tea, Sri Lanka lost eight wickets for 57 runs in the third session in a dramatic collapse. England edged out a lead of 96 runs, which grew to 99 before bad light forced early stumps.
