india vs windies, 5th odi, thiruvananthapuram
India vs Windies, 5th ODI, Thiruvananthapuram
Windies, opting to bowl first under overcast skies, lost Shai Hope and Kieran Powell inside the first two overs. Both Bhuvneshwar Kumar and Jasprit Bumrah put the swinging new ball to good use, clogging runs and picking a wicket apiece.
Ravindra Jadeja was introduced as early as the 10th over and picked two in his marathon 8-over spell, before adding two more to finish with four wickets in the match.
With Windies two-down, Marlon Samuels hit a few boundaries in his 38-ball 24 to up the ante but fell to Ravindra Jadeja.
Khaleel Ahmed didn't quite get Marlon Samuels this time but accounted for Rovman Powell, who was opening in place of dropped Hemraj Chadrapaul, and Jason Holder - latter being the most important wicket in the innings.
Bumrah picked two, Kuldeep Yadav one as the Windies were blown away for 104 in 31.5 overs - their lowest total versus India in ODIs. Eight batsmen registered single-digit scores.
Windies picked an early wicket in the small 105-run chase. Shikhar Dhawan chopped onto his stumps, falling to Oshane Thomas for the second time in the series.
Chasing 105, the most India had to contend with was Oshane Thomas's pace. The 21-year-old bowler didn't just get Dhawan, but also drew outside edges from Virat Kohli (dropped by Jason Holder) and Rohit Sharma (off a no-ball).
Rohit Sharma teed off, racking up his 38th ODI half-century to canter India home in only 14.5 overs.
46.4 overs is the shortest completed 50-over ODI in India featuring India. Courtesy the win in the fifth ODI in Thiruvananthapuram, India won their sixth consecutive ODI series at home.
