5-0 whitewashes by away teams in ODIs

West Indies in India, 1983 - Incidentally, this was the first time two teams were involved in a bilateral series of five or more ODIs. The rubber was viewed as a revenge series for the visitors after their shocking defeat to India in the finals of the World Cup at Lord's a few months ago. West Indies were ruthless in each of the games as winning margins being 28 runs, four wickets, eight wickets, 104 runs and six wickets suggests.

Australia in New Zealand, 2005 - It took nearly 22 years for another team to emulate the success of Clive Lloyd's West Indies of yore and aptly it was Ricky Ponting's men who eventually did it. The tour kicked off with the inaugural T20I in Auckland and the Aussie domination was so complete that they won everything on the tour barring a rain affected Test. Australia won three of the five ODIs with a margin of 80 or more runs and they chased won 234 in the fourth ODI inside the 35 overs when T20 cricket was still in its infancy.

South Africa in West Indies, 2005 - Few bilateral series have witnessed the one-sidedness as much as South Africa-West Indies ODIs with the former winning all of the last seven bilateral series between the two sides. The hosts were so mentally out of place that they lost the third ODI in Bridgetown to a Charl Langveldt hattrick after needing just two runs off the last three balls. West Indies posed little challenge in the series as South Africa kept knocking off targets with ease. The pace trio of Langveldt, Makhaya Ntini and Andre Nel wrecked havoc taking 29 out of the 42 West Indian wickets to fall in the series.

Sri Lanka in England, 2006 - England's limited-overs teams in the 2000s weren't the best of the ODI sides going around as Sri Lanka completed a successful tour of England by drawing the Tests 1-1, winning their inaugural T20I and capping it off with a 5-0 win in the ODI leg. Upul Tharanga (347), Mahela Jayawardene (328) and Sanath Jayasuriya (322) feasted on English bowling while Lasith Malinga's slingers earned him 13 scalps under 18 apiece. The last ODI at Headingley witnessed Sri Lanka chase down 322 in just 37.3 overs with a world record opening stand of 286 between Tharanga and Jayasuriya - a record that still stands.

Australia in West Indies, 2008 - Though the gun players of Australia from the 2007 World Cup triumph in the Caribbean were gone, they were still a force to reckon with in world cricket, at least for the West Indies who were on a downward spiral following Brian Lara's retirement the previous year. Shane Watson was the star for the visitors, topping the run charts scoring 206 runs at a 40-plus average and a 90-plus strike rate in addition to his six wickets at less than 20. He also scored the only hundred of the series.

South Africa in West Indies, 2010 - It was an encore of what happened in 2005 when the two sides last locked horns in the Caribbean - South Africa winning the Test series 2-0 and ODI leg 5-0 on both occasions. Hashim Amla was the wrecker-in-chief scoring 402 in the series - still a record in a bilateral series against the hosts - including two hundreds. It was South Africa's last full tour to West Indies.

India in Sri Lanka, 2017 - Before the start of this tour, Sri Lanka had never been whitewashed in a home ODI series of any length. India's domination was so strong throughout the series that the hosts failed to go past 250 even once. Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma were the chief architects with the bat while Jasprit Bumrah played the lead among bowlers taking 15 scalps. This was Sri Lanka's second 5-0 defeat in 2017 after the loss in South Africa in January and unless a sudden turnaround, another such whitewash is looming large over them in November when they tour India for the return series.
